Dhanteras is tomorrow — and yes, this year it feels extra special.
For us in the US, Dhanteras 2026 falls on Friday, November 6 — the first day of Diwali, dedicated to Dhanvantari, the god of health, and to Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth
It’s not about how much you spend. It’s about what stays with you, something that reminds you that abundance has entered the house.
What to Buy on Dhanteras 2026
LIVE: Things that stay in the home
1. Dhaniya + Lakshmi silver coin or small silver bar. I never buy big jewellery, just a small 1gm silver coin with Lakshmi-Ganesh. It goes straight into your puja thali and stays there all year. Pure, auspicious, budget-friendly.
2. Steel or brass utensil — the real Dhanteras
Before gold, our grandparents bought a utensil. One new steel dabba, a brass lota for puja, or a small pressure cooker you’ve been needing. It honors Dhanvantari and you actually use it. I’m buying a small brass diya + a steel storage set.
3. Broom — yes, broom!
New jhadu on Dhanteras = Lakshmi stays, negativity goes. My mom always insisted. Grab one and don’t use it till next day after puja.
LEARN: Things that grow your wealth
4. Something for health — Dhanvantari’s blessing
Because Dhanteras is health first. A new yoga mat, a copper water bottle, an Ayurvedic book, or a year’s worth of vitamins for the family. I’m gifting my boys copper bottles for school — they’ll actually use them.
GROW: Things that grow with you
6. Tulsi plant or Gita book
A living tulsi for your porch, or a small pocket Bhagavad Gita for your desk drawer. I keep one in my working station/desk.
7. Something you give
Dhanteras multiplies when you share. New clothes for help at home, a box of mithai for a neighbor, etc.

My Dhanteras Plan for Friday Evening
Puja muhurat is in the evening pradosh kaal — around sunset on Friday.
- Quick clean of entrance, a small rangoli, and a Diya 🪔 at the entrance works.
- New broom in corner, coins and utensils in puja thali ready for the puja.
- Light dinner, then early sleep — Diwali marathon starts!
You don’t need 10 bags from the store. You need one thing bought with shubh bhav — an auspicious heart.
Live. Learn. Grow. And Shubh Dhanteras from our little home to yours.
Happy dhanteras.
