It’s already March, the spring season. It is the right time to buy as many plants and seeds you want. For me, spring break is the time when I buy all outdoor plants that I intend to buy for the year.
Early spring is the best time you can begin a vegetable garden or a flower bed of your own. Spring is the ideal time for the plants to grow and mutiply. This spring season I have grown some vegetables and some annual flowering plants.
Today, I will be sharing five perennial plants that I bought. Most hardy perennials can survive frost and can even bloom the next year.
Before I share my plants with you all, I want to inform that I am not an expert in plants and gardening. I am still learning and an amateur gardener. For expert advise please consult websites solely on gardening and plant care.
1. Pink Jasmine
So, here is the first plant that I have been looking to buy for so long. The smell of its flowers are just nostalic. It brings all my childhood days back whenever I smell the flowers.
The best thing about this plant is that its drought resistant so I do not have to worry about it dying in the winters.
Pink Jasmine is a vine and it needs a support to climb up. It bears beautiful that has amazing fragrance.
Scientific name: Jasminum polyanthum
Light: Full Sun (4 plus hours every day)
Flowers: White with a tinge of pink
Height: Can grow upto 25 ft.
As of now, my pink jasmine is just a baby. I cannot wait to see it growing into a huge vine with hundreds of flowers hanging giving a spectacular corner in my backspace.
Pink jasmine is not. aclinging vine, so I do not have to worry about it destrying my walls or my backyard fence. Still, I need to figure out what support I sould provide it so that it grows tall and healthy.
This plant is not much demanding and can grow in partly shade as well. In Texas, I do not have to worry about sunlight so I hope my plant will do good.
2. Rose
My second plant is a magnificant rose. I mean, who does not love a rose flower. You may not like the plant as it bears thorns but you cannot resist a flower.
Before buying this plant, I was little bit confused because it has pointed thorns that might scratch children if they are running in the backyard. Then I thought if I want rose flower I have to adjust with the thorns as well.
So, after doing lot of thinking, I ended up buying three rose plants, one red, one yellow, and one mixed. I have also educated my boys about the thorns, therefore I do not have to worry about it a lot.
Scientific name: Rosa
Light: Full Sun (6 plus hours every day)
Flowers: depending upon the variety, the color of flowers vary
Height: Can grow upto 5 ft.
Rose plants are perennial shrubs and they resist frost as well. They need little maintenace, just sunlight, and watering. Rose plants are flowering shrubs and I am looking forward to getting several new blooms in a month or so.
3. Indian Shot aka Lily
Canna Lily or Indian Shot, ete, etc, this plant has so many names. It comes in various colors and we chose bright reddish orange. I just got one plant and this is again a perennial plant but sensitive to frost. I have to keep an eye on it whether it will survive Texas frost or not.
Canna Lily is said to be invasive and grows fast. We have planted it with other plants in a flower bed. Let’s see how it behaves.
Canna Lily flowers are gorgoeus and big in size. I am hoping to see some butterflies and bees as visitors in my backyard.
Scientific name: Canna indica
Light: Full Sun (6 plus hours every day)
Flowers: depending upon the variety, the color of flowers vary
Height: Can grow upto 8 ft.
4. Daisy
Trust me, you cannot ignore a full bloomed daisy plant. This white colored flower looks so beautiful and attractive. I just picked it up randomly. I also bought daisy seeds and sprinkled it on the garden bed. I am waiting for seeds to sprout and grow into small plants.
It is a perennial herb as well but I doubt it survives frost.
Scientific name: Bellis perennis
Light: Full Sun (6 plus hours every day)
Flowers: White
Height: Can grow upto 2 ft.
5. August Beauty
August beauty is a shrub that bears gorgeous small white flowers that has sweet fragrance. The common hindi name is Mogra. This plant is also a kind of jasmine.
I had this plant in my native house in India and this is the most common flowers used to make garlands as hair accessories and for offering to the God.
This plant is easy to maintain and less demanding so i do not have to worry a lot.
Scientific name: Gardenia jasminoides
Light: Full or partial sun
Flowers: White
Height: Can grow upto 6 ft.
My plant is still a baby but it bears a few buds ready to bloom.
I will be planting all these plants in the ground so that they stay strong and healthy. Since most of these are perennials and frost resistant, I am hoping they will survive in winter as well.
I enjoyed buying these flowers and gardening a lot. It will be joy watching these baby plants thriving.
