Reincarnation in Hinduism

This is a very tricky topic that I have opted today. There are many reincarnations believe people have in Hinduism. Today I am going to pen down the concept of reincarnation according to Vedas and other holy books.

Firstly, I will not disagree with the fact that Hindus do believe in the “afterlife” concept or I would say “heaven and hell” concept. There is a strong believe that based on your good or bad karma, your afterlife is going to be. If you are doing good deeds in your current life you will spend your after life in heaven or if you are in bad deeds side, you are going to end up in hell. But there is different concept of afterlife in Hinduism.

According to Gita chapter 2 verse -22

vāsānsi jīrṇāni yathā vihāya
navāni gṛihṇāti naro ’parāṇi
tathā śharīrāṇi vihāya jīrṇānya
nyāni sanyāti navāni dehī

“As a person sheds worn-out garments and wears new ones, likewise, at the time of death, the soul casts off its worn-out body and enters a new one.”

So, now you can have a first hint that it’s not about individual, it’s about soul. The body lives in the prison of the soul. When a person dies it’s their soul enters in another body. According to jivan chakra (life cycle) of every soul stay on earth till it becomes pure. Here I am talking about the fourth layer of the universe. According to Vedas, the fourth layer of universe is the earth and every soul takes birth on the earth. A soul becomes pure when it’s free from six things such as Kaam(lust, desire) Krodh( anger), Moh(fascination attachment), Mada (pride),Lobh (Greed) and Matsarya( Jealousy). Then they leave to sixth layer which is heaven till then the soul keeps changing the body. Thus, the living being undergoes many births and deaths in this mortal world. They remain in this mortal world because of their desires and attachment.

There is absolutely nothing mentioned about reincarnation in all the Vedas. According to Hinduism versatility, they believe just not in one heaven or one hell. They believe in multiple heaven and hell. This is the topic for next post. Till then happy reading and happy holidays.

  1. Hi dear, thanks for following my blog. I read your post and I was fascinated with it. I am not Indian but I am a true believer of reincarnation, and I learn something new with your post today, about the things that you have to leave behind in order to be a pure soul. I am far from being a pure soul tho, but I am slowly making progress 😊
