Happy Halloween !!! Know history, Tradition and Facts

Halloween is the end of summer celebrated on 31st October every year. This is an old tradition originated from ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. The tradition to celebrate Halloween is to light the bonfires and wear the costumes to ward off ghosts.

Pope Gregory in 8th century decided to honors all the saints on November 1, as this day incorporates traditions of Samhain and the evening before was known as All Hallows Eve which became Halloween now. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31st they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth.

In general on Halloween it is considered to do activities like trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, festive gatherings, donning costumes and eating treat.

Know more about Trick-or-Treat

It is an European tradition that Americans adapted over time to celebrate the Halloween. They dress up in costume and go from house to house asking for treat. A treat can be money or food. This practice is eventually becoming Trick-or-Treat. Young women believed that on Halloween they could divine the name or appearance of their future husband by doing tricks with yarn, apple parings or mirrors.

In the late 1800s, American molded Halloween into a holiday or get together in community and neighbouring than about ghosts, pranks and witchcrafts. At the turn of the century, Halloween parties for both children and adults became the most common way to celebrate the day. Parties focused on games, foods of the season and festive costumes.

Halloween Parties

After adapting tradition from Europe new American tradition was born, and it has continued to grow. Today, Americans spend an estimated $6 billion annually on Halloween, making it the country’s second largest commercial holiday after Christmas.

Facts Check:

  • Halloween is on 31st October every year.
  • Americans spend an estimated $6 billion annually on Halloween.
  • 25% of total chocolate sales in the US happen only for Halloween.

I will share my first experience of Halloween in my next blog. What are you waiting for?? Go ahead and trick-or-treat. Happy Halloween!!!!

Being Motivated !!!!

Being motivated is the biggest challenge. If you are teaching a student then it might be easy but teaching your mind about what you want to be, is the big task. Generally, people lose focus. They start well but they get diverted at times or somewhere.

Let’s take an example, approximately 120 students start engineering degree classes in a college. During their college life, they take same lesson, same study environment, almost everything is same such as same set of books and other stuff. Why only few can make through the course? Why not all the students pass the course or get equal marks in each course? There is no rocket science to find the reason here. They lose the race because they lose the focus. They are not able to lift themselves above the common crowd line. Being motivated towards your goal is important rather than being part of a team.

In an average, there are 500k students getting their degrees. This is the minimum requirement for any jobs in the world. Are we having enough number of jobs? What you should do to make yourself different from the crowd so that you can be noticed to be the Show Stealer? In general, what you do to be noticed in a crowd is either you make yourself shine enough to be in the limelight or raise your bar enough to be seen from far.

Today, I am going to talk about the different ways by which you can keep yourself motivated to not only complete your goal but also to rise like a shining start in the common crowd.

  1. Set a Major goal:  To be at some place you need to set the destination. Think about reaching a place without setting a location in GPS. Not possible these days, right? In the same way, we need to work hard towards a goal. Not matter what you want to do in your life have a goal. The things to remember in this part is you must have small small milestones or mini goals to evaluate the progress.
  2. Finish what you start : Half-finished project is useful for no one. Some one have said in past that “ Quitting is a habit”. It its very important for you to finish what you start.
  • Learn how to Learn – This is a very important part of life. Someone has said in past “Learning Never Ends” or “Learning is a Continuous Process”. You can learn from anyone and anywhere. You can even learn from a newborn baby. There is no defined line for the start and end of knowledge. If you think you know all about something, then why there are thousands of inventions going on every day. More that 20% students score 90% marks in a class, but their understanding levels are different why so.

This is very important how you are learning the learnings. Implementation of the learning is key in any learning. Getting marks in any subject can be cakewalk but implementation of the logic and rules can be tougher than the writing answers to questions. This is the reason kids starts with A for apple rather than A-Z at one go.

I will write another full blog on this topic and will introduce few techniques about learn the learning’s. Till then happy learning.

Role of Healthy Diet in Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle

Food is the fuel required for providing energy to our body. When we intake food, it is digested by our digestive system and complex organic compounds are broken down into simpler form that can be used to derive energy to carry out all the metabolic activities of the body.  Thus, food is very important for our body to work and grow properly.

Photo by Fotograf Jylland on Pexels.com

Food can be both healthy and unhealthy. Healthy food comprises of fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, cereals, dairy products, etc that are cooked or raw while unhealthy food are the food loaded with white salt or sugar, processed and packaged that provide excess calories to the body. It is extremely important to distinguish between good food and bad food so that only good calories enter our body.

Eating healthy or having a balanced diet is the key for a healthy lifestyle. It is said that our body reflects what we eat on daily basis. Unhealthy eating habit is responsible for obesity and other lifestyle disorders. According to a report by National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), available on Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2015-2016, the prevalence of obesity is 39.8% among adults in which higher percentage of adults are from 40-59 years old (1). Unhealthy eating habit adds to lethargy in our life and increases the stress level.

Nutrition plays a major role in the proper growth of our body. Therefore, it is very important to have a diet full of nutrition that helps our body to grow and flourish properly.  A nutritional diet if consumed every day, reduces the chances of lifestyle disorders such as obesity, chronic heart diseases, blood pressure and diabetes.  Healthy eating leads to a healthy body with right weight and BMI (Body Mass Index). A healthy body has a healthy mind and a satisfied soul as it helps in energizing the body with positivity.

For obtaining proper nutrition from the food, a variety of cereals, fruits and vegetables should be included in our diet everyday. Eating a variety of food is very important to get the proper nutrients. People who eat one kind of food everyday become deficient in some minerals and vitamins. Thus, a well balanced diet is important to get the required amount of nutrients.

Eating healthy does not only refer to the calorie intake but also means what nutrients we give to our body. A balanced diet is a combination of both micronutrients and macronutrients. Micronutrients are iron, vitamin A, iodine, zinc, etc that is found deficient in approximately one-third of the world’s population, according to Global Report, 2009 (2). Deficiency of micronutrients leads to serious consequences.

Calories are also an important part of our healthy diet as counting calories help us in maintaining a healthy weight. The amount of calories vary with the age, lifestyle and gender. A person leading a sedentary life needs less calories than a physically active person. An adult male needs more calories than an adult female. How much calorie a person needs is determined by his/her BMI.

A balanced diet provides the adequate energy to carry out all the metabolic activities that takes place inside our body. Healthy and good nutrients keep our body healthy and repair any damages that have occurred in the body.

If you are determined to have a healthy lifestyle, the first thing you need to do is to give good nutrition to your body. Good nutrition is the first step in reducing obesity and risk of any chronic diseases at younger ages. Making good effort in right direction such as eating health and being active everyday are small steps in achieving a milestone.

A Healthy Lifestyle: Is It That Hard These Days?

In today’s world of modernization and digitization, life is super relaxing. If we don’t want to cook, we can order our favorite food online. Thanks to online websites such as Ubereats, Swiggy, Zomato, etc. We can even buy some ready to eat stuffs from market. When we don’t want to go for shopping, we can order clothes and even groceries online. Thanks to the online shopping websites such as Amazon, Myntra, Shein, Clubfactory, etc. We have machines to wash and dry our clothes. We have vehicles to drop us to our office, malls and even the nearest park. Isn’t it fantastic!!!!

Well, it is!!! It is fantastic to have a lavish life full of amenities that make our life easy to live. But this advantage of this wonderful life has also led to many disorders that are linked to this lifestyle. A comfortable lifestyle is leading to a sedentary lifestyle. Sedentary life is linked to some of the famous and well known Lifestyle Disorders such as obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and various heart diseases.

In no way I mean we should remove all the life easing appliances from our lives. What I mean is, we should try to improve our way of living so that we remain fit and healthy. A healthy lifestyle is responsible for a healthy mind, healthy body and a healthy soul.

A sedentary lifestyle is one of the biggest reason of a person being unhealthy these days. Not only a sedentary life is leading to unhealthy lifestyle but smoking, chewing tobacco, consuming alcohol and taking drugs are also linked to unhealthy lifestyle. Apart from these eating processed and packaged food is also a part of unhealthy lifestyle.

Lifestyle and Health

You may wonder, is lifestyle linked to our health? YES, is the answer undoubtedly. For further reading on impact of lifestyle on health you can go to this link (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4703222/)

Now the question arises, what Healthy Lifestyle refers to??

A healthy lifestyle refers to a positive way of living that helps in getting healthy body, mind and soul. It is not a one day process. It is a way of living that enhances the well being of a person by improving the health from within.

A healthy lifestyle helps us to enjoy each moment of our life to the fullest. If we are healthy and disease free from within then only we can enjoy our life. A healthy body has a healthy mind and a healthy soul. Thus, healthy lifestyle works on the whole body from within and helps us to be a better human being day by day. It gives new hope to live a healthy and new life everyday. It fills our mind with positivity and promotes good health of entire family.

WHO defines a healthy lifestyle as “a way of living that lowers the risk of being seriously ill or dying early” (http://apps.who.int/iris/handle/10665/108180).

How to Achieve a Healthy Lifestyle?

To achieve a healthy lifestyle we need to work hard on our own body and maintain a healthy eating habit. Some of the ways to achieve healthy lifestyle are

1. Balanced diet
2. Physical exercise
3. Health Education
4. Meditation
5. Proper Sleeping Pattern
6. Avoiding smoking, drugs and alcohol

WHO is working hard for campaigning and promoting a healthy lifestyle. WHO has its own recommendations on its website (http://www.euro.who.int/en/health-topics/disease-prevention/nutrition/a-healthy-lifestyle) for healthy lifestyle. In its recommendation, it has provided 12 steps to healthy eating that promotes a healthy lifestyle.

If you are serious about your health related issues and determined to work on yourself, then you should begin your day with some physical exercise. The physical exercise does not mean going to gym. You can go for a 30 minutes walk in your locality or in a near by park.

Next thing to do is to improve your eating habit. Eat lots of fresh vegetables and fruits. Stop drinking juices and soft drinks that are loaded with lots of sugar. Make your own juice at home and do not add sugar or salt in it.  Keep a check on what you eat and drink. Add proteins, fibers and healthy carbohydrates to your diet.

Photo by Trang Doan on Pexels.com

Now, you should fix a time to relax. Sleep is very important for a relaxed body and mind. Fix a bed time at night and stick to it for most of your days. Try to meditate for 10 minutes in the whole day whenever you get time. This also helps to relax and lead a stress free life.

The most important thing that you need at the beginning and throughout this lifestyle improvement process is to have strong determination and consistency in what you are doing.

Working hard on yourself is not selfish, it is the most important thing to do. Nobody can work for your body. Only you can work for it. You are responsible for your healthy being. Nurture your body well and see the results.

I hope this article will motivate you to start a healthy lifestyle from today itself. I am still in the learning phase and trying to inculcate a healthy lifestyle.

Lets start this journey together and have some encouraging results. Please comment below in the comment section for any updates on your healthy lifestyle.

Stay healthy and stay fit.

Are You Wise and Not Wasteful?

What do you mean by being wise and not wasteful?

How can we be wise and not wasteful?

We all know the consequences of the anthropogenic activities on the nature. I am also aware of all different types of environmental issues that we are facing severely today.

Last year, I visited an International Conference on Environmental Challenges and Sustainability at Ranchi, Jharkhand, India were renowned professors were invited from esteemed universities across the country for their keynotes, lectures and scientific talks. So, I wanted to share my views.

Every now and then we hear about conferences on environment occurring here and there. We also hear, read and watch news on environmental summits occurring across the world. Why, because Man has destructed nature to an extent that now he needs to fix everything.

What do people do in such conferences? People come, have big talks, raise issues related to environment, formulate methods to solve or minimize the problem, etc and when they go home they forget everything. None of us have the commitment to change anything. We just listen, talk, read and forget.

What is the outcome of such seminars, workshops and conferences that take place around the globe? Do they reach the common masses? Do they really contribute towards any improvement of the society?

NO.

Nothing happens. People talking about environment, nature, earth, etc, just talk and walk away. Very few have the guts to do something and take stands by themselves for solving the problems/issues.

Do you really think, we need a Prime Minister for “Swachhata Aviyan” or “Swachha Bharat Aviyaan“?? Don’t we know that we should keep our house and surroundings clean??

Photo by Yogendra Singh on Pexels.com

Do you really think, we need laws to make us understand the importance of environment??

Do you really think, we need government officials or a government to teach us how to clean our surroundings??

No, right??

Why are we so ignorant when it comes to the environment? Why? Where is the problem??

The problem is in our habits, in our way of thinking, in our determination. Knowledge is a waste if it is not applied practically.

All of us know how we can keep our surroundings clean. All of us know, how we can contribute towards betterment of our environment. The day we really start worshiping our mother Earth, the problem will be solved. If we start taking care of our surroundings as we take care of our homes, this world will be a better place to live.

This post is a reminder to me and to the readers that every little bit of changes in our habits can have a large impact on the environment. Little positive changes daily can bring great changes in the environment.

God created nature and then he created Man to protect nature, not to destroy nature. Man is just a part of nature like other animals and he should respect the nature and the mother Earth.

REMEMBER: Man needs nature for his survival. Nature does not need man for its existence.

So be wise and not wasteful.

Introduction to CRM

CRM is a backbone for any organization. A customer can be delighted by the product or the offerings made by a company but if they fail to covert a good sale to a good service, then it is a problem for the future of that organization. A CRM application is a one stop solution of an organization where they can do end to end transaction right from getting leads to serving the customers.

CRM which stands for Customer Relationship Management tool, plays a vital role for any organization to maintain its end to end transaction with a customer. A CRM tool should be enabled in such a way that it fits all the organization and business needs of a service provider for its end client. CRM tool should be capable enough to handle all the transaction right from getting a lead/opportunity till handling all the queries during customer services. There are many tools in the market which can fit to the purpose but there are no tool which can fill the 100% needs.

CRM by Modules:

This is a huge debate topic that how many modules are there in CRM? The quick answer is five. But the core CRM is made up of only three modules. Reporting and Social media/Events can be considered as other wings to it.

The three core modules of the CRM are:

  1. Sales
  2. Services
  3. Marketing

Sales: Sales is the process to create or generate a new business for the company. A typical sales process starts with Lead which converts to an account till the end stage of invoice. Opportunity plays a vital role in a sales process. An opportunity creates sales pipeline to track the opportunity and it is called Won if customer agrees with the quote and it is called Lost when customer do not agrees with the quote and sales lifecycle ends.

Sales Process

Services: This is a wide area where an organization provides support to the sale which is already made. In other words, serving the customer through different modes of operation. It can be a call back request from the customer to a monthly invoice or an email statement or an appointment to answer the queries.

This is a big area which helps an organization, to see a happy customer which may lead to a positive social review.

Services do not have a defined process in the CRM process like Sales. A service an be of two types: event based, or commitment based. For example:  a call back request from a customer is an event-based service while monthly statement in an email or a paper mail is a commitment-based service.

Core Mode of Services

Marketing: Think about an advertisement or a trade fare or a sales campaign where a lead gets generated or an organization displaying offerings/launches/benefits for future customers. By the definition mode, marketing is a process to generate or to bring new businesses to an organization.

Like Services, marketing also does not have any defined process. It depends upon the strategy of an individual organization. Let’s meet in my next blog for more for more on CRM. We are going to talk about the CRM admin modules, Entities and all the possible things you should know. Write me on raghubanshp@gmail.com if you have any question.

Expectations of a 5 year old Boy

My just turned 5 year old son has many expectations from me. He is completely different from his elder brother. May be it is his age that makes him like this. Whatever be the case, I am very happy the way he is. He wants me all the places wherever he goes be it his school, playground, park or even while watching TV. His day starts with mommy and ends with mommy.

My Lifelines

When we were in India 3 months back, he wanted me to pick him up from the school everyday. Dropping on and off to school was the passionate job of my father in law. As my toddler expected me to pick him up from the school, I sometime fulfilled his demand.

Now, when we are in the United States living together as a complete family with my husband, my son expects both of us to drop him off at the bus stop. So, everyday I and my husband dropped the kids to the bus stop. Seeing kids boarding their bus and waving goodbye makes everyone emotional but it also gives a sense of satisfaction that they are going away from us only for their betterment.

Today, since I was not feeling well due to weather change, I told my husband to drop the kids to the bus stop alone. I convinced my elder son for this and he agreed for the sake of my health but the younger one started to weep. He wanted me to come too irrespective of my health. He is too emotional and sentimental.

Every now and then my toddler often complaints about me for not going to his school during lunch break. Actually, in my kid’s school, parents are allowed to come into the cafeteria and spend some time with the kids and watch them eating their lunch. My kiddo expects me to come to his school during lunch time as according to him, only I don’t come to see him while every other kid’s mommy come to see their kid.

This time, I promised him that I will surely come to his school to meet him during lunch time. Let’s see when will that day come.

Apart from these specific expectations, he has a list of expectations from me. I hope, I would be able to meet him to his expectations as soon as possible.

Being parents, what are some expectations that your children have with you. Please feel free to drop your feelings and stories in the comments below.

Happy Parenting!!
